Stop using me ...

Still two hours to go but I am so desperately need this working day to end and I go home.
Yesterday was hectic too and the only way out is to run away …
I don’t want to answer the phone because it will be another request to be added to my to do list and watch it getting bigger and bigger and see the papers, reports and other printed materials cluttering in front of me that I feel I look like the cartoon character of a that miserable employee that is almost invisible because of the stuff on his desk.
What made things worse is that S came to me this morning and began with … Nesrina, you know you are expert in “Nite” - it’s a software. And I need you to do the following, there was no room for me to say “I am busy or have other things that I am doing” as she continued, it’s required for the region and extremely import and by the way we need them ASAP and I trust no one but you to do these reports. The thing is I discovered that they have nothing to do with “Nite” she only gave me her work to do… :I
If she needs help, why didn’t she address it in that way, that I don’t feel I am obliged to do the work of someone else and I have no one to turn too as my boss has moved.
Yesterday a very similar situation happened with the GM… he asked about the market shares for our company vs the competition from 2000 till YTD. And of course he didn’t give me the chance to say a word. … come on he’s the GM… I have to leave everything and start with what just has popped in his mind. Luckily I had the data from 1998, I just had to search for the file and update the data.
I don’t like it when I feel that someone is using his authority to make me miserable by asking for things that would delay me.
Why are all their requests urgent and have to be done on the spot. you management team know nothing about time management and we do pay for that, it really makes me laugh when I say I need enough time to get the stuff done properly and they give me that "manage your time and prioritize your tasks".
It' Thursday, I don't want to be late.. .yes I don't have plans as I am tired and I will be a bad sleepy company but I need to go home.
Now back to work!

Well, why don't you go to S and tell her to do her job that she suppose you'll do for her? That would take a block off your shoulder. For the other tasks, just try to stay calm and cool, my friend.

that is irritating.. and if they are insensitive to you, you can not let them get away with it. next time S tells you something like this... tell her ok, but i am quite busy, can i do it later? or maybe you can let someone else do it?

as for the GM, this happens only very occasionally i a m guessing, so i think you can testa7mely his requests shewaya. in the spirit of team work and all that stuff. :)

I add my voice to you Nesrina. It happens a lot. But no, I'm not letting it to happen again. I hate it when people make use of me because I don't say no.

As for the GM request, it reminded me of smth funny that happened once for me. It was my division manager who wanted a certain thing urgently, after 30 mins. Guess what happened? The power went off. The UPS went off as well. No electricity, no working computer, how could I get you what you want?! But he still insisted that he wants it :D

When I started working, I used to work no less than 12 hours a day, from 8:00 AM till 8:00 PM and I used to go to work 6 days a week... I used to stay late in the office so that our customers would be satisfied.

Then I reached a point where I realized that I should stop. Now, I work only the official time from 8:00 till 5:30 PM only 5 days a week (taking 2 days off).

I learned that people are neve satisfied no matter how hard you try. I learned that everything can wait as long we are not disrupting a whole business... etc. That can make a long post actually. :)

You have to start acting, do not surrender to the sick environment.

    Dear Neri,
No one at ur work place will care for ur interest , or ur deadlines or or or they're just seeking their own interest , yeah they're selfish , everyone cares only about the impression he/she gives to the manager... u have work to do as well ,so my little advice is ,it's ok to be helpful only when u have extra time for others esp. at work!!
For me work doesn't worth extra effort, just the working hours and that's it, NOTHING more :).

    NK,
Look I do the junior jobs too. if I am working on something and I want to ensure that the result will be exactly as I wish... there's nothing wrong with that.
I slept well as I was exhausted :)
    Thanks so much.

    PW,
Glad u said that, I thought about it but I found out that there is no good way of saying it. I suck at politics and stuff but at least I don't wanna do something that can be taken against me especially that u know people has their ways of telling stories.

    Doshar,
You know I told her that I am working on something for O (my ex boss, we still have work on NA markets) and she said ... he has to understand that you are working on Egypt as well. He used to be her boss too and honestly I didn't like her way so I decided to do the things she gave me first so I can concentrate on O's.
But as for the GM ... I had no choice :)

    Moon,
LOL... we have quite the same mentalities here and I became creative when it comes to dealing with them, one day the network was down ... I took my laptop and went to Beano’s and thanks to the wireless connection I downloaded some stuff, drank coffee and came back :).

    Ahmad,
Have been there too, used to work for long hours, be the last person to leave the office.
Till I decided that I won’t do that anymore and now I leave on time most of the days.
Yes people are never satisfied and they Do forget too.

    Rain,
Look I am known as a responsible, reliable and a hard working employee and I have worked to earn it. So what went wrong is … I kinda raised their expectations and that’s why it’s now frustrating for both of us that they can see I have changed just because I leave at 5:30 or 6 and I see nothing wrong with trying to win my personal life back while do my job within the company’s working hours.

Many thanks to you all for the support, needed it so much & meant a lot to me.

you know nesreen , I was like you when someone gives me a job whether I have time or not , I used to accept , Now I can say , there is time constraint.

For S , if she has no authority on you , tell her I am busy now with some other work that the GM gave you. And tell her in a cool polite way that it is her job after all , and if she needs help , she can ask for some assistance but for someone else.

I dont know but elhamdAllah I wasn't in that position before.

But i know some one who used to have fights with his colleague for that because the responsibilities were not clearly assigned. ANd everyone tries to throw the responsibilities on others' shoulders.

And the fights ended when the manager set responsibilties for each . And thus every one knew his limits.

And when the GM assigns you by something, discuss with him the other duties you do have. And set with him which is more important and the dead line of each task and definitely he wont tell you all to be done today.

Put him practically in the picture and Let him define te ASAP in date manners! we Rabena m3aki ISA

Thanks Roora so much for your sincere concern, look things are a bit different. first of all... S is kinda fill for the post that my boss used to have on a temporary basis . what upsets me is that she gave me HER job and I couldn't say a word as I thought there is not good way to saying it. the answer I had was " it's not my job, u should be doing these reports or your assistant" apart from the fact that I was busy... it's not acceptable to be used by another person because of his/her seniority. But I guess that happens to a lot of people.
As for the GM, I am sorry to say that, multinational environments has its own rules and politics that I am against but that doesn't mean they don't exist, no one tells the GM he is busy and won't be able to give his request a priority, he expects u to throw whatever is in ur hand and proceed with his first. so if I do that the contrast will be so obvious.
El7amd Lellah that u haven't been in this situation, although u sounded like u can deal with it:)
    very grateful for the advice.
